Refers to a studies commissioned by the Department of Energy to examine the case for minimising and avoiding air conditioning in office buildings. The studies confirmed the potential of many buildings to achieve acceptable summertime temperatures without full air conditioning, some areas of current practice require further attention, including window design, electric lighting, thermal mass, fan power, air volumes and hours of operation, sources of unwanted heat, too-high peak temperatures in naturally-ventilated buildings, and organisational culture.
