Does the Voorhees-principle enhance the efficiency of CO2 refrigeration systems?

Summary

The objective of this paper is to estimate the enhancement potential of a CO2 freezing system by using a reciprocating piston compressor modified according to Voorhees. The process corresponds to the economizer principle, which is known from practice. A simulation was created for this purpose. The compressor of the comparative CO2 refrigeration cycle was ideally modified according to the Voorhees principle. The resulting efficiencies of the modification were used for system simulation as well as for comparison to measurements taken from a prototype. The ideal increase of efficiency appeared to be 17% for a system with an evaporation temperature of -35°C at an ambient temperature of 32°C whereas 10% were achieved with the prototype compressor.
