DRY CRYOGENIC TREATMENT INCREASES MACHINE TOOL LIFE.

Type of article: Article

Summary

DRY CRYOGENIC TREATMENT OF TOOL STEELS AT 83 TO 77 K (-190 TO -196 C) FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME INCREASES WEAR RESISTANCE OF THE TREATED TOOLS BY A FACTOR OF AT LEAST 2 OR 3. A DRY CRYOGENIC PROCESS, CRYO-TECH, IS DESCRIBED. TOOLS AND OTHER PARTS TO BE TREATED ARE LOADED INTO A CHAMBER WHERE THE TEMPERATURE IS LOWERED ON A PRECISE SCHEDULE BY MEANS OF A CRYOGENIC CHAMBER OPERATING THROUGH MECHANICAL REFRIGERATION. THE TEMPERATURE IS HELD FOR 20-36 HOURS, DEPENDING ON THE MASS IN THE CHAMBER, BEFORE BEING GRADUALLY RAISED BACK TO NORMAL. THE PROCESS IS COMPARED TO THE USE OF DRY ICE. THE RELEVANCE OF THE TECHNIQUE TO MACHINE TOOLS USED IN BOXMAKING IS DISCUSSED.
