Summary

Carbon-neutral energy is essential for reducing CO2 emissions, which are considered a cause of global warming, and for realizing a sustainable energy society. e-methane is a promising tool for achieving this. e-methane is methane (CH4) synthesized by reacting carbon dioxide (CO2) with hydrogen (H2), a process known as methanation. The advantages of e-methane are that by using CO2 as the feedstock, CO2 emissions during combustion are virtually zero, and that it can be supplied through existing natural gas and LNG infrastructure. This allows for a seamless transition to a carbon-neutral society without disrupting energy supply.
Osaka Gas Group (Daigas Group) is working on not only research and development of e-methane, but also demonstration-scale projects, with an eye toward the widespread adoption of e-methane, and furthermore, the future adoption of e-LNG. This paper introduces two projects: a methanation demonstration facility installed at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan and a methanation demonstration facility currently under construction in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture.
