This paper sets out the history and background to the use of secondary refrigerants, before outlining their case against direct refrigeration systems. It will go on to explain the application and selection criteria for systems using single phase secondary refrigerants, and report shortly on brines and mineral oils. A table gives the main caracteristics for twenty-one secondary refrigerants.
