Summary

ELECTRICITY TARIFFS ARE REDUCED DURING THE NIGHT, SOME ECONOMY IS POSSIBLE BY PRODUCING ICE DURING THIS PERIOD AND ALLOWING IT TO MELT DURING THE DAY. TO PRODUCE THE ICE IT IS NECESSARY TO OPERATE THE EVAPORATOR AT LESS THAN THAT NEEDED TO FREEZE THE WATER, WHICH REQUIRES MORE ENERGY. DURING THE NIGHT THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE, AND THUS THE CONDENSER PRESSURE, ARE LESS, WHICH REQUIRES LESS ENERGY FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF COOLING. IT IS NECESSARY TO COMPARE THE INCREASE IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN THE FIRST CASE WITH THE REDUCTION IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN THE SECOND TO ESTABLISH THE ECONOMIC EFCC. THIS MUST BE UNDERTAKEN BY USING A COMPUTER WHICH WILL ANALYSE THE THERMODYNAMIC CYCLE EFFICIENCY IN CONJUNCTION WITH A PROGRAM CONTAINING DETAILS OF TYPICAL AMBIENT TEMPERATURE PROFILES. THE PAPER DESCRIBES SUCH AN ANALYSIS FOR AN AUSTRALIAN INSTALLATION AND SHOWS THAT THE INCREASE IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION IS LESS THAN THAT ANTICIPATED.
