Effect of a freezing and thawing process on the characteristics of expression and final moisture content of excess activated sludge.

Summary

Experiments were carried out using an excess activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant before and after freezing and thawing. The equilibrium moisture content of the frozen and thawed excess activated sludge was about 0.1 below that of unfrozen sludge on a wet-cake mass basis, implying that a spontaneously combustible cake can be obtained even at low expression pressures.
