Summary
Using heat pumps in cold climates can be challenging due to frost formation on outdoor evaporators. This issue is resolved by periodic effective defrosting. For effective defrosting, it is critical to have a comprehensive knowledge of behaviour heat exchangers under frosting conditions, as well as factors that cause inefficient defrosting, e.g., uneven frost formation. A detailed analysis of frosting behaviour of a multi-circuit V-shape evaporator is presented in this paper. In the first step, we analyse the frosting pattern over the evaporator circuits under various ambient conditions. According to the results, the frost formation is highly sensitive to the relative humidity; furthermore, it has been found that less, but thicker frost accumulates on the evaporator at lower air temperatures. This study also examines the effect of non-uniform air flow on the frosted V-shape multi-circuit evaporator, showing how velocity non-uniformity affects evaporator capacity and causes uneven frost distribution over the circuits.
