Effect of plastic and edible films on quality of muskmelons during refrigerated storage.

Summary

Mexico exports about 100,000 tons of muskmelons to USA and actually to European Community. The shelf life of the fruits is about 20 days. In order to reduce the weight loss, edible coatings of several chemical compositions were tested, combined or not with plastic film bags. Results indicate that mixtures with less than 10% of solids (7% of oil + 3% carbohydrates) decreased fruit weight loss and this effect was amplified with plastic use. "Galia" melons responded better than "Cantaloupe", maintaining fruit quality characteristics. The authors conclude that muskmelon fruits can be commercialised for long periods, stored or transported for periods of 25 days under refrigerated conditions and after then placed in marketing conditions.
