EFFECT OF STUNNING METHOD ON THE TIME OF ONSET, DURATION AND RESOLUTION OF RIGOR IN RAINBOW TROUT (SALMO GAIRDNERI) AS MEASURED BY VISUAL OBSERVATION AND ANALYSES FOR LACTIC ACID, NUCLEOTIDE-DEGRADATION PRODUCTS AND GLYCOGEN.

Author(s) : AZAM K., MACKIE I. M., SMITH J.

Summary

RAINBOW TROUT (SALMO GAIRDNERI) WERE STUNNED BY ELECTRIC SHOCK, CO2 NARCOTISATION, HYPOTHERMIA AND BLOWS TO THE HEAD. ALL THE FISH EXCEPT THOSE STUNNED WITH HYPOTHERMIA WERE BLED AND KEPT IN ICE FOR 72 H. MAJOR DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND ; THE RATE OF PROGRESS OF RIGOR WAS SHORTEST FOR FISH WHICH HAD SUFFERED THE GREATEST STRESS (HYPOTHERMIA) AND LONGEST FOR THOSE WHO HAD SUFFERED THE LEAST STRESS (SHOCK). ANALOGOUS DIFFERENCES WERE OBSERVED IN LACTATE, GLYCOGENE, AND NUCLEOTIDE DEGRADATION BY-PRODUCTS. THE TIME FOR RESOLUTION OF RIGOR IS THE SAME, REGARDLESS OF THE STUNNING METHOD.
