Summary

EUROPEAN MANUFACTURERS SEEM TO HAVE CHOSEN R134A TO REPLACE R12. ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR, THE MAIN PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED IS RELATED TO THE SEARCH FOR SUITABLE LUBRICANTS THAT ARE FULLY SOLUBLE WITH R134A ; POLYALKYLENE GLYCOL (PAG) OILS SHOW TOO HIGH HYGROSCOPICITY AND UNACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCES WITH RESPECT TO WEAR OF METALLIC MATERIALS, WHEREAS ESTER OILS ARE SATISFACTORY, THOUGH NOT AS GOOD AS CURRENT MINERAL OIL IS WHEN USED WITH R12. A LEADING ITALIAN FIRM IS PLANNING TO START MASS PRODUCTION OF COMPRESSORS FOR R134A WITH ESTER OILS IN 1993. A NEW, MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT COMPRESSOR FOR R134A, HAS BEEN ALREADY DESIGNED, WITH AN IMPROVED ELECTRIC MOTOR, SO AS TO MAKE UP FOR THE LOWER COP OF R134A WITH RESPECT TO R12. THE NEW COMPRESSOR IS EXPECTED TO COST ABOUT 10 % MORE THAN THE OLD ONE. E. F.
