Efficiency aspects on the development of a refrigeration compressor for commercial applications.

Summary

During the last decades, efficiency has become an issue of paramount importance in household refrigeration, and the compressor efficiency has contributed a lot for achieving the ever increasing requirements established in this market. The scenario has never been the very same when considering commercial refrigeration, but it has been changing lately and the trend is to have the manufactures devoting more and more importance to the subject. The approach is obviously different for the two markets, due to some different weights imposed on defining the best trade-off between energy efficiency, noise level, reliability and cost. This paper presents the studies performed during the development of a new family of commercial compressors. The work aims to shed some light on how different branches of engineering analysis have been considered in order to achieve the project targets, in special on how different disciplines, like noise, experimental analysis, thermodynamics, robust design, etc., interacts with computer aided engineering tools. The results demonstrate huge efficiency improvements associated with significant reductions in total noise, vibration and discharge gas pulsation levels, as well as a significant improvement in terms of compressor reliability.
