Efficient control of modern industrial refrigeration plant.
Number: pap. 147
Author(s) : GILLIES A.
Summary
Modern efficient designs of industrial refrigeration plant will almost certainly employ speed control for motor driven machines including compressors, fans and pumps. However, to take best advantage of these at low refrigeration loads and at ambient temperatures below the design value the control system must dictate the most efficient operating speed for the machines. Year-round operation of large industrial refrigeration plant gives considerable opportunities for energy savings but maximising those savings requires both the functional capability to adjust the speed of motor driven machines and the correct control strategy to ensure the saving on one element is not offset by an additional energy requirement due to a negative impact on another machine or a heat exchanger. This paper will consider how an integrated control system can control a number of variable speed machines to achieve maximum overall efficiency of a modern industrial refrigeration plant. The parameters that influence the target setpoint are often already being measured and can easily be integrated into control algorithms. The impact of efficient control on reliability and maintenance requirements will be included. Methods to determine the most efficient control strategy will be considered. Results and a case study will be presented.
