ELECTRIC POWER AND REFRIGERATION: BRIEF HISTORY.

ELECTRICITE ET FROID : UN PEU D'HISTOIRE.

Author(s) : THEVENOT R.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE REFRIGERANT COMPRESSOR WAS DISCOVERED ABOUT 40 YEARS PRIOR TO THE ELECTRIC MOTOR (GRAMME, 1873), BUT THE ELECTRIC MOTOR RAPIDLY BECAME THE MAIN DRIVING FORCE OF COMPRESSORS (IN THE USA, IN 1914, 90% OF REFRIGERATION PLANT DRIVEN BY STEAM ENGINES ; IN 1924, 62% BY ELECTRIC MOTORS). THE ADJUST-MENT OF ELECTRIC MOTOR, SINCE THE ORIGIN, TO THE VARIOUS SUCCESSIVE TYPES OF REFRIGERATING MACHINES IS DISCUSSED: DC MOTORS, THEN AC MOTORS (SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR, THEN INDUCTION MOTOR BECOMING PREPONDERANT BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS). HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF VARIOUS OTHER DUTIES OF ELECTRIC POWER IN REFRIGERATING SYSTEMS (MAINLY CONTROL), OF THERMOELECTRIC REFRIGERATION, OF SUPERCONDUCTION.
