Energy efficiency and selection of ammonia refrigeration cycles in refrigerated warehouses.

Author(s) : ZHANG J., GROLL E. A.

Summary

With the support of the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW), a survey of the energy efficiencies of public refrigerated warehouses was conducted in the United States and Canada. Based on the results of this survey, the current use of ammonia as a refrigerant in warehouse applications by the IARW members is addressed in the paper. The relationships between energy efficiency and compression stages of the ammonia plants are discussed. Also, the difference in energy efficiency when using different types of intercoolers in two-stage ammonia compression plants is analysed. The results show that cycles with flash-type intercoolers are available and have higher efficiency. These should be adopted for new installations.
