Performance of a cold store R502 refrigeration system retrofitted with the ozone-benign R507 refrigerant.

Summary

Two side-by-side, close to identical R502 refrigeration systems operating in a vegetable cold store were monitored for 26 days before one of the systems was converted to operate on R507, and then for a further 24 days after the conversion. Four oil flushes, rather than the recommended three, were required to reduce the mineral oil concentration to an acceptable level. Reliability of the system has been satisfactory so far. Compressor performance increased by about 7% which was consistent with expectations. Gains in heat exchanger performance of up to 20% occurred, and these may have contributed to an improved system COP.
