Summary
The food industry in Portugal reached a final energy consumption of approximately 450 ktep, equivalent to 9% of the total consumption of the transformation industry. The breakdown of this consumption is 77% for fuel and 23% for electric energy. The author gives the relative impact of refrigerating plants in terms of electric energy consumption in various sub-sectors: dairy; margarine making and edible oil refining; meat products; preparation and freezing of fishery and sea-farming products; fish canning; preparation and freezing of fruit and vegetable products; transformation of cereals and pulses.
