Summary

In existing cold chain system in South Africa, the refrigeration system is one of the most energy intensive segments and presenting the greatest potential for energy efficiency improvement in short and long term. In this paper the energy efficient technology, variable speed drives (VSD) was presented to the case study based on the named Tshwane Market which is the second biggest wholesaler in South Africa. VSDs reduce motor electricity consumption and prolong the life of the equipment by adjusting motor speed to match the time-dependent load profile. To match the VSD profile with the time-dependent heat load during the cooling process, the cooling process was numerically simulated, and the product load with time was identified. The VSD introduced lead to a save of a considerable amount upon the total energy demand in the cold chain facilities and bring a great value-added to the industry in term of cost saving.
