ENERGY IN THE WORLD: THE PRESENT SITUATION AND FUTURE OPTIONS.

Author(s) : ROGNER H. H.

Summary

THE AUTHOR REVIEWS THE HISTORY OF OIL PRODUCTION AND DEMAND OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS, AND RELATES THIS TO THE GROWTH OF SUBSTITUTE FUELS AS PRIMARY ENERGY SUPPLIES SUCH AS NATURAL GAS. THE FUTURE FOR NON OPEC PRODUCERS IS NOT PARTICULARLY BRIGHT AS LOW OIL PRICES DISCOURAGE EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT. TWO THIRDS OF PROVEN OIL RESERVES ARE IN OPEC COUNTRIES SO PROSPECTS ARE GOOD. LONG TERM ENERGY PROSPECTS ARE REVIEWED, THE REPLACEMENT OF ONE FUEL FOR ANOTHER HAS BEEN MAINLY DUE TO IMPROVED EFFICIENCY, FOR EXAMPLE COAL FOR WOOD, OIL FOR COAL, NATURAL GAS FOR OIL ETC. THERE WILL BE A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE DEMAND FOR ENERGY WITHIN THE NEXT THREE DECADES, AND THERE WILL BE AN EVEN GREATER RELIANCE ON FOSSIL FUELS NOTABLY NATURAL GAS AND COAL, ALTHOUGH GAS IS MORE ATTRACTIVE ENVIRONMENTALLY, AND OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR MANY DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.
