Summary
This paper will discuss the selection of the refrigeration system for a distribution centre in the outskirts of Belgrade, Serbia. The paper will discuss important criteria’s for selection of the refrigeration system in general, as well as ammonia refrigeration system for cold storage is energy efficiency of the system. The use of frequency converters for capacity regulation of compressor increases energy efficiency of the system and reduces the energy the consumption, which leads to less CO2 emissions and less cost for the user. The energy efficiency of the system can also be increased using waste heat from the refrigeration system. The waste heat can be used internally for space heating and for under floor heating in the cold store. Further heat recovery is planned. Warm water can also be used for washing cars and trucks. At the moment the distribution centre is outside the nearest village but in the future some of the waste heat can be distributed to the neighbours reducing the water consumption on the cooling towers and help increasing the overall efficiency of the system – and improving the economy of the system owner. The refrigeration system enables recovery of available heat from compressor oil and superheated vapour of refrigerant. Some of the waste heat from refrigeration system is used for air coolers defrosting. Safety concerns have lead to some close calculations and simulation of the ventilation system in the machine room. Different scenarios have been considered and standards have been studied. The paper will elaborate on this topic as well.
