Summary

In many buildings there is a variety of zones with different users and thermal load profiles. Zoned HVAC systems provides the ability to manage the heating or cooling of individual rooms by use, to adjust individual room temperatures for individual preferences, or to close the airflow in rarely-used rooms. Nowadays, the main manufacturers of low and medium capacity unitary air-to-air ducted heat pumps provide an increased number of fan speeds. This offers an opportunity to develop zoning regulation systems based on a communication gateway, that provides a closer integration of the mentioned zoning system with the heat pump, controlling aspects such as switching on and off, operating mode, fan speed, setpoint temperature, etc. This paper presents the development of a new computational model to simulate these systems with the EnergyPlus program.
