Environmentally benign air cycle heat pump and refrigeration systems. 2. Preliminary experimental data.

Summary

As part of the EC JOULE II programme, an open air cycle system has been built, in order to test different air cycle concepts. The plant has 3 main areas: the air compressor with downstream components, the compressor in a "cold air" unit with downstream inter-cooler and regenerative heat exchanger, and an expander in a cold air unit and downstream cooling chamber and components. Full instrumentation has been included to enable measurement of operating temperatures, pressures, volume flow rates, component operating speeds, heat input and output and energy consumption. Details about the plant design and preliminary results of experiments are described in the paper.
