Environmentally benign air cycle heat pumps and refrigeration systems. 5. The effect of water on coefficient of performance.

Summary

In air cycle systems, the water in the air has an important influence on the choice of cycle type (open or closed) and cycle technology. In an open cycle, there is a need for oil-free compressors and expanders with lower efficiencies than oil-injected machines, which are an option in a closed cycle. Closed cycles require temperature differences in the cold- and hot-side heat exchangers which reduce the COP. In the paper, the open and closed cycles making use of recuperative heat exchangers are compared for different air humidities for typical air refrigeration cycles.
