Equilibrium properties of ice slurry based on aqueous solutions of ethyl alcohol.
Author(s) : MELINDER Å.
Summary
Aqueous solutions of ethyl alcohol and a few other water solutions are used below the freezing point in various ice slurry applications. A main purpose with the ice slurry technology is to benefit from the great enthalpy change when ice melts. Ice crystals will start to form when the temperature of a water solution is lowered below the freezing point. Phase diagrams giving the enthalpy as a function of the additive mass fraction for a water solution shows how the heat of melting of the ice drastically increases the ability to take up heat from i.e. a cooling cabinet in a supermarket. For dimensioning purposes there is a need to estimate enthalpy differences. However, the background material for constructing enthalpy phase diagrams and other thermophysical properties of aqueous solutions and ice can be used to generate other charts and tables with equilibrium values of enthalpies, ice fraction and ice slurry density. This paper gives examples of such charts and tables for aqueous solutions of ethyl alcohol.
