Summary

The objective of this study is to evaluate the quantities and types of gases contained in polyurethane foams (PFs) and the refrigeration circuits of domestic refrigerators. Where certain refrigerants are replaced using other refrigerants, comparison of the physicochemical properties of the refrigerants replaced and the refrigerants used to replace them plays a vital role. The refrigerant charge to be recovered from the refrigeration circuit was quantified, and the quantity of foam-blowing agent in the PFs which depends on the year the appliance was manufactured, using RAL classification, was also quantified. A model for the type is proposed, with the refrigerant charge based on: current legislation, RAL and ECOLEC policy, and technical information provided by refrigerant and polyurethane foam (PFs). Once the type and the refrigerant charge had been defined according to the year in which the refrigerator was manufactured, and the percentages had been allocated as in a Gaussian bell curve, this approach was applied to all refrigerators recycled.
