Estimation of composition in refrigeration and heat-pump systems using zeotropic refrigerant mixtures.

Author(s) : LUNDQVIST P. G.

Summary

The paper deals with issues related to performance evaluation of zeotropic alternatives such as R407C or Isceon 59. Refrigerant retrofits to alternative refrigerants are often evaluated experimentally in laboratories or under field-like conditions. But composition changes may alter these measurements. The paper addresses this problem for a number of possible causes to composition changes (leakage, refrigerant hold-up, selective solubility, etc.) The paper shows that it is possible to monitor selected parameters such as sub-cooling or superheat to detect changes in composition. The paper also shows that it is difficult to draw conclusions regarding composition changes from observations of the COP, or the cooling capacity.
