NICOLLE (1824-1909), UNCLE OF CHARLES NICOLLE, THE BACTERIOLOGIST, WENT TO AUSTRALIA IN 1852 WHERE, IN 1863, HE OBTAINED HIS FIRST PATENT FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ICE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF FOOD. THEN, WITH THE HELP OF A. MORRIS, A STOCK BREEDER, AND T. S. MORT, AN ENGINEER, HE MANUFACTURED A UNIT FOR FREEZING AND STORING MEAT IN A COLD ROOM, THEN ANOTHER ONE, WITH AMMONIA, CAPABLE TO FREEZE 0.5 T MEAT. DESIGNED BY HIM, LARGE COLD STORES WERE BUILT AT DARLING HARBOUR. ANOTHER UNIT WAS BUILT FOR THE STORAGE OF FROZEN MEAT ON BOARD THE < NORTHERN > SAILER, BUT THIS SANK IN 1878. G.G.
