Summary

EEVs are being used in refrigeration systems because of their fast response and active control over a wide operating range. However, it is difficult to quantitatively model mass flow rate due to its complex internal structure and flow behavior of refrigerant. In this study, the mass flow rate of R32 through EEV was experimentally measured using an air-water heat pump system. The orifice diameters of the EEVs used in this heat pump are 2.40mm and 1.65mm. The experiment was conducted to cover almost all of the actual operating range of EEV by operating the heat pump in wide operating range. Based on these experimental data, previous empirical correlations for EEV flow rate were evaluated and new correlation was developed. Meanwhile, the working fluid of the actual system flows in a mixture of oil and refrigerant. Little previous EEV models considered the effect of oil on the mass flow rate of refrigerants. The effects of oil circulation ratio on the refrigerant mass flow rate through EEV was also investigated.
