IN THE SOUTH AFRICANMINING INDUSTRY A TWO-FOLD APPROACH HAS BEEN ADOPTED TO ALLEVIATE HEAT STRESS. FIRSTLY, ENGINEERING CONTROL IS BEING ADVANCED THROUGH INCREASED MECHANIZATION AND THROUGH CONDITIONING THE ENVIRONMENT. SECONDLY, FORMAL WORKER SELECTION ANDHEAT ACCLIMATIZATION HAVE BEEN INSTITUTED TO ENSURE THAT ONLY WORKERS WITH THE REQUISITE DEGREE OF HEAT TOLERANCE ARE EXPOSED TO STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENTS.
