Summary

APPLE CULTIVARS OF GLOSTER 69, JONAGOLD, IDARED, GOLDEN DELICIOUS CLONE B, MUTSU, CHARDEN AND GRANNY SMITH FROM 2 LOCATIONS, WERE EXAMINED IN 5 DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERES AND IN UNREGULATED AIR. THE FRUITS WERE REMOVED FROM THE STORE AT 3 DIFFERENT DATES (MID-APRIL, MID-MAY AND MID-JUNE). THE BEST SUITABILITY WAS FOUND WITH LOW OXYGEN CONTENT (1%) AND THE COMBINATION OF LOW OXYGEN (1%) AND INCREASED CO2 -CONTENT (6%). UNDER THESE EXTREME CONDITIONS THE OCCURRENCE OF FRUIT ROT, SCALD AND PULP BROWNING COULD BE PREVENTED TO A LARGE EXTENT ; IN GRANNY SMITH APPLES, SCALD COULD BE PREVENTED EVEN TOTALLY.
