Exergy comparison of nitrogen production from membrane and cryogenic distillation processes.

Author(s) : THOROGOOD R. M.

Summary

An exergy analysis is carried out for processes to produce nitrogen from air by membrane separation and cryogenic distillation. An optimistic counterflow membrane performance is assumed with oxygen to nitrogen polymer selectivity values from 10 to 40. The cryogenic process is a conventional single column distillation using air expansion. The exergy analysis demonstrates the contributions of the different unit operations in the cryogenic process to the overall energy efficiency. Comparison of both processes, advantages and drawbacks are given.
