Expansion valve for CO2: measurements and simulation model for sub-critical inlet conditions.
Author(s) : MARTIN K., ALPÖGGER T., RIEBERER R.
Summary
The expansion valve is an important component in refrigeration systems. For the refrigerant CO2 the control strategy for the valve is of special interest since the high-side pressure, which has a significant influence on both the cooling capacity and the efficiency, can be varied by means of the valve opening. The impact of the high-side pressure on the system can either be investigated by means of experiments or - more cost efficient - by simulations. Of course, the latter requires a reliable model for the mass flow rate through the valve depending on the refrigerant states and the flow area. This paper presents experimental data for the mass flow rate with special focus on sub-critical operating conditions, i.e. sub-cooled liquid at the inlet. Based on the experimental data a model for predicting the mass flow rate through the valve has been developed.
