Summary

DESPITE VARIOUS CHECKS FOR BLOOD, IMMUNE REACTION, VIRUS INFECTION AND GRAFT VERSUS HOST DISEASE ARE STILL MAJOR RISKS OF BLOOD TRANSFUSION. IN RECENT YEARS, IMMUNOSUPPRESIVE REACTIONS DUE TO BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS ARE BEING DISCUSSED. AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD TRANSFUSION IS THE SAFEST TRANSFUSION METHOD. IT IS INDICATED FOR PATIENTS WHO DO NOT REQUIRE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS AND SURGERY CAN BE SCHEDULED SEVERAL MONTHS IN ADVANCE. FOR THESE CASES, THE MEAN BLEEDING VOLUME AND THE VOLUME OF TRANSFUSION ARE ESTIMATED BEFOREHAND. TO THE PRESENT, FROZEN AUTOTRANSFUSION HAS BEEN CONDUCTED FOR 104 OF HIP ARTHROPLASTY AND 46 CASES OF IDIOPATIC SCOLIOSIS AT THIS FACILITY.
