Summary

MOST OF THE SMALL-AND MEDIUM-SIZED AIR-BASED HEAT PUMPS IN NORWAY ARE EQUIPPED WITH AIR COOLERS WITH NARROW FIN SPACING (1-3 MM) WHICH REQUIRE FREQUENT DEFROSTING. IN THE SOUTHERN AND WESTERN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY WHERE THERE IS A MILD COASTAL CLIMATE, THESE HEAT PUMPS PERFORM WELL. THERE ARE SOME AIR-BASED HEAT PUMPS IN COLDER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, ON THE OTHER HAND, THAT HAVE NOT FUNCTIONED SATISFACTORILY. EXPERIENCE SHOWS THAT HEAT PUMP EVAPORATORS, WHICH MAINLY OPERATE AT OUTDOOR TEMPERATURES WITHIN THE RANGES OF 273 TO 263 K (0 TO -10 DEG C) AND IN HIGH RELATIVE HUMIDITY, REQUIRE INCREASED FIN SPACING COMPARED TO THE STANDARD UNITS DEVELOPED FOR THE AIR-CONDITIONING MARKET.
