Summary

A phase change thermal storage device with metal foam/paraffin wax was developed which has insulated walls around and the experiment on the device performance was conducted at different power density under the condition with and without natural convection, respectively. The temperature variation with time under different heating power was obtained and a semi-infinite model with the second kind boundary conditions was used to simulate the bottom temperature of the tested vessel. The experimental results show that the obvious natural convection occurred in the melting part when the tested vessel was heated from below, and the heat transfer capability and the thermal storage efficiency of the thermal storage device improved significantly because of the effect of convection. The thermal storage efficiency with the effect of convection was 38% greater than that without the effect of convection, and the maximum bottom temperature decreased by about 26°C at 5000 W/m2.
