Experimental and numerical analysis of the undercooling in a phase-change energy storage.

Summary

An industrial process of energy storage, usable for air-conditioning and refrigeration, in which a phase-change material is encapsulated in spherical containers, was studied on a test plant. The study aimed at analyzing undercooling (delay of the liquid-solid transformation) present with the phase-change materials during the charge mode (crystallization) at low temperature. The undercooling phenomenon was modelled, taking its stochastic character into account and considering the heat transfers into the tank. After a complete melting of all the capsules during the discharge mode, the charge mode is mainly governed during cooling by the undercooling laws. A model, validated by the experimental results, is presented. It can be used to optimise both charging and discharging periods for industrial installations.
