EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENT OF FROST THICKNESS ON A FLAT PLATE.

Author(s) : O'NEAL D. L., TREE D. R.

Summary

FROST THICKNESS WAS MEASURED ON A FLAT PLATE IN A WIDE RANGE OF AIR TEMPERATURES, HUMIDITIES AND VELOCITIES AND OF PLATE TEMPERATURES. ALL THESE PARAMETERS CORRESPONDED TO THOSE ENCOUNTERED IN THE APPLICATIONS OF AIR-AIR HEAT PUMPS. FROST THICKNESS INCREASES WHEN REYNOLDS NUMBER INCREASES UP TO A CRITICAL VALUE, WHERE IT REMAINS CONSTANT. AIR HUMIDITY AND PLATE TEMPERATURE HAVE A STRONG EFFECT ON FROST THICKNESS, BUT AIR TEMPERATURE HAS ALMOST NO EFFECT. AN EMPIRICAL FORMULA IS DEVELOPED FOR THE PREDICTION OF FROST THICKNESS.
