Summary

One of the major problems which occurred during the exploitation of air heat pumps (ASHP) in the cold season is the frosting of outdoor heat exchanger’s surface. A layer of frost accumulated on its surface, leads to decreased heating performance and energetic efficiency. To restore the ASHP’s nominal capacity a defrosting process needs to be conducted periodically. The necessity of this procedure causes penalty energy usage, which in turn leads to decreasing of already low COP. During the investigation of the air to air heat pumps technologies, a possibility of improvement of their efficiency via a suitable defrosting process was noticed. The experimental research of defrosting system of a new air source heat pump with a reverse cycle heat exchanger is presented in this paper.
