Summary

THE FROST LAYER FORMED ON A VERTICAL COOLING SURFACE WAS MELTED UNDER THE NATURAL CONVECTION OF AMBIENT AIR IN THE SAME CONDITION AS WHEN FROSTING. THE RESULTS WERE OBTAINED AS FOLLOWS: 1) MELTING STARTS/FROM THE SURFACE OF THE FROST LAYER AND THE MELTED WATER PERMEATES INTO IT ON THE NORMAL DIRECTION TO THE COOLING SURFACE; 2) WHEN THE CRITICAL SATURATION CONDITION OF THE FROST LAYER IS REACHED BY PERMEATING MELTED WATER, WATER STARTS TO DEPART FROM THE SURFACE. THIS CRITICAL DEGREE OF SATURATION DEPENDS ON THE AVERAGE VOID FRACTION OF THE FROST LAYER AT THE BEGINNING OF DEFROST; 3) THE MELTING PROCESS MAY BE MODELLED TO ANALYZE THE THERMAL CONDITION AS THE RESULTS OF OBSERVATIONS.
