Experimental study of secondary refrigeration system using CO2 hydrate slurry.

Summary

Conventional refrigerants used in cooling and air-conditioning systems contribute significantly to climate change due to their high global warming potential and poor environmental compatibility. Among the innovative technologies aiming to reduce their environmental impact, secondary refrigeration system offers a promising alternative. In such systems, CO₂ hydrate slurries can be employed as secondary refrigerants. The hydrates act as phase change materials (PCMs) that absorb heat during formation and release it upon dissociation, providing efficient thermal energy storage and transfer. This study investigates the operating conditions required for the effective use of CO₂ hydrate slurries for air conditioning and food conservation. Particular attention is understanding the operational conditions for using hydrate slurries in such application, namely temperature stability and flowing properties, which influence the different stages of a secondary refrigeration system, i.e. generation, transport, and use of CO₂ hydrates.
