Experimental study of secondary refrigeration system using CO2 hydrate slurry.

Summary

The increasing demand for cooling in various sectors, including air conditioning, refrigeration, and industrial processes, has led to a significant rise in global energy consumption and environmental impact. To enhance energy efficiency and reduce the ecological impact of cooling systems, the use of diphasic (solid/liquid) secondary refrigerant have emerged as a promising solution for thermal energy storage and transfer. Among the various types of diphasic secondary refrigerants, gas hydrates slurries have attracted growing attention due to the high latent heat capacity of gas hydrates and ability to operate within practical temperature ranges. In this study, CO₂ hydrate slurries are explored as potential phase change slurries for thermal management applications, particularly in air-conditioning and food preservation systems. These hydrates can absorb and
release large amounts of heat during their formation and dissociation processes, providing an efficient medium for cold storage and transport. This study has two objectives: the first one consists in identifying the operating parameters providing stable temperature regulation and favourable rheological behavior of the slurry and the second one on the ability to produce hydrate slurries in a heat exchanger. Understanding these conditions is essential to enhance the performance of CO₂ hydrate-based systems and to enable their integration into innovative sustainable refrigeration and advanced thermal energy storage systems.
