Summary

The article describes the experimental pond in an arctic environment, which is used for testing structures (ships, ice-breakers, off shore structures), existing in Finland at Wärtsilä; its operation and the different types of test which can be undertaken are also described. It focuses on the fabrication process of the ice layer which must simulate the conditions encountered in the Arctic seas, on the pond. The different physical properties of the simulated ice are described and briefly analyzed, in relation with the properties of real ice.
