Facing the challenge to produce ice slurry for freezer applications.

Summary

The aim of a new EU project is to develop a new environmentally-friendly refrigeration system for low temperature applications. This system will be based on a machine able to produce ice slurry for freezer applications. This is a challenging project since very little research has been done on this subject. The consortium is composed of 8 partners from 4 nations representing the whole refrigerant loop and elements to be developed. These partners will work together to design and develop the four following major elements of the refrigeration loop: an ice-particle generator system able to produce ice slurry at -35°C; a non-toxic two-phase fluid that will contain enough ice-particles at -35 °C; a specific pump able to pump and to regulate the ice-slurry flow; a sensor to determine the ice concentration and enable the system's energy regulation.
