Summary

This paper is intended to update professionals in the air conditioning facilities with regards to the new system requirements relating not only to filtration, to associated health issues and to environmental considerations, but also to those requirements linked to energy saving measures as mentioned in the amendment D.L. 311 del 29/12/2006. The authors highlight the role of the new generation of filtering elements available on the international market and their innovative value in terms of energy efficiency, both with regards to filtration of particles and when used to deal with gas pollutants. As happens in Europe and in the United States, in Italy the mechanical filters, the active electrostatic filters and the chemical filters have to undergo laboratory-based performance tests (D.M. 2/4/1998) in addition to an assessment of their 'life cycle cost' in accordance with the calculation document developed for this purpose by Eurovent/WG 4B "Air filters". The authors highlight the different classes of filtration introduced in accordance with the UNI EN 13779 and with the UNI 10339 which is currently subject to a public inquiry; namely the fundamental standards for the engineering design of units in terms of 'indoor air quality' and the energy performance certification of the buildings and the air conditioning units connected to them.
