IN WINTER AIR CONDITIONING, EXTERNAL AIR IS OFTEN USED BOTH FOR VENTILATION AND THE POSSIBLE REFRIGERATION OF THE INTERNAL ZONES OF BUILDINGS. IN SUCH A CIRCUMSTANCE SERIOUS DAMAGES OF THE WATER COILS CAN ARISE FROM A FREEZE-UP, IF, BECAUSE OF AN IMPERFECT MIXING OF RETURN AND OUTDOOR AIR STREAMS, THE MIXED AIR BECAME STRATIFIED, WITH THE LOWEST TEMPERATURE BELOW 273 K (0 DEG C). THE PAPER DEALS WITH THE MEASURES TO BE TAKEN TO AVOID AIR STRATIFICATION. E. F.
