Finned tube heat exchangers: the enhancement of the heat transfer air side.

[In Italian. / En italien.]

Author(s) : FORNASIERI E.

Summary

Three methods of heat transfer enhancement are reviewed and discussed: scaling down the geometry of the heat exchanger, increasing the turbulence by means of corrugated surfaces, and using interrupted surfaces. Different types of interrupted surfaces are illustrated as representative examples of the current state of art. The analysis includes some theoretical notes on the parameters used for defining the heat transfer characteristics of a finned surface and on the methods of evaluating the performance of such surfaces. On the latter point, the problem is to evaluate properly the trade-off between increased heat capacity and increased fan power, resulting from the use of enhanced surfaces.
