INFLUENCE OF TURBULENCE ON PERFORMANCE OF CIRCULAR HELICALLY FINNED TUBES.

Author(s) : FOURIE J. G., KROGER D. G.

Summary

THE PAPER DEALS WITH AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF VARYING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRESSURE GRADIENT AND HEAT TRANSFER IN FINNED TUBE EXCHANGERS (HELICAL FINS). SCREENS CONSISTING OF WIRE MESHES OR BAR GRIDS ARE INSTALLED AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AHEAD OF THE BUNDLES IN ORDER TO CREATE MAXIMUM TURBULENCE LEVELS OF 25%. THE TUBES ARE STAGGERED INCLUDING BUNDLES OF 1 TO 8 ROWS. FREE FLOW RATE RANGES BETWEEN 2 AND 10 M/S. WHEN THE SCREENS ARE LOCATED RELATIVELY NEAR THE BUNDLES, AT HIGH TURBULENT FREE FLOW RATES, THE EFFECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT IS INCREASED MARKEDLY, MAINLY IN THE FIRST TUBE ROW. A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE PRESSURE GRADIENT IS OBSERVED WHEN THE BAR GRID IS POSITIONED AHEAD OF A SINGLE ROW BUNDLE.
