FIRE EXTINCTION TESTS WITH CO2 IN THE PILOT INSTALLATION OF VALENCE (FRANCE).

ESSAIS D'EXTINCTION AU CO2 DANS L'INSTALLATION PILOTE DE VALENCE (FRANCE).

Author(s) : DUPORT A., DEVERRE A.

Summary

THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE A TEST CARRIED OUT IN A ROOM OF 5,700 M3 AT 253 K (-20 DEG C). THE EQUIPMENT USED WAS A 3,450 LITRE RESERVOIR OF CO2, A MANUALLY CONTROLLED PNEUMATIC VALVE AND AN EXPANSION VALVE TO SPRAY THE CO2 INTO THE ROOM. THE PURPOSE WAS TO STUDY THE EVOLUTION OF TEMPERATURES, PRESSURE AND THE OXYGEN CONTENT TO ASSESS THE RATE OF CO2 DIFFUSION BY ELIMINATING THE DYNAMIC EFFECT DUE TO THE EJECTION SPEED WHICH IS FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF SOUND AND TO ESTIMATE THE RESIDUAL CO2 LIQUID AFTER EXPANSION. DURING 8.5 MINUTES OF INJECTING THE CO2, THE OXYGEN CONTENT WAS, AFTER 30 SECONDS, LOWER THAN THE AVERAGE CO2 CONTENT, SHOWING THAT DIFFUSION WAS PRACTICALLY INSTANTANEOUS. THERE WAS NO FORMATION OF DRY ICE PROVING THAT THE DEVICE FUNCTIONED SATISFACTORILY.
