AS FIRE GROWTH IN COLD STORES IS RATHER SLOW, THERE IS NO GREAT RISK TO PERSONS AND THEREFORE FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL ARE MAINLY AIMED AT PREVENTING DAMAGE TO STORED FOODSTUFF BESIDE TRADITIONAL METHODS (FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS, SMOKE AND FIRE DETECTORS, ETC) THE AUTHOR THINKS IT ADVISABLE TO HAVE EXTERNAL WALLS WHICH ARE EASILY KRACKED DOWN. RECOVERY OF FOODSTUFF WOULD THEN BE EASIER IN CASE OF FIRE. AS FAR AS AMMONIA REFRIGERANT IS CONCERNED, THE PAPER SURVEYS TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE SAFETY MEASURES: IT IS STRESSED THAT DIRECT EXPANSION AIR COOLERS SHOULD BE PLACED IN RECESSES PROVIDED WITH DOORS, TO SEPARATE THE REFRIGERATING PLANT FROM THE STORAGE ROOM.
