Summary

Conventional sprinkler systems can cause severe damage to the goods present in cold stores. This paper describes an alternative, effective and economic technology in which the warehouse is continiously supplied with nitrogen, to modify the atmosphere to an oxygen level at which fires cannot develop. The main purpose of this paper is: to explain the principles on which the process works; to reference the test work that has been undertaken to test the process; to detail the equipment used to generate an atmosphere; and to provide some examples of installations.
